A Kinky Escape from our Covid Reality

Yes! We are open. But not the same way we were in the pre-Covid world. We no longer host classes or gatherings, BUT you are invited to host your own intimate gathering at Sub Rosa!

We still host classes digitally, including the fan favorite FemDom Bootcamp. In it’s digital incarnation we are able to invite FemDoms from all over to share their views and insight, so there’s an added bonus to online classes!

What kind of gatherings can you host? We invite you to use Sub Rosa as a sexy escape for four people or fewer who wish to escape the real world for a bit in a luxe space full of kinky sex toys and bondage furniture. Want to take some dirty pictures for your play partners who are quarantined in another state? Just want to hang out in lingerie, use the WiFi, and drink champagne in a clean safe place that not your home or a bar? We are open for that as well.

What is the rate? The rate is $80 per hour with a 2 hour minimum and a 4 hour maximum. After we get to know you, however, longer rentals or even an overnight stay in our Queen-size bondage bed is an option.

How do you make a reservation? Email us for the password to our reservation system. You will need to tell us a little bit about yourself and the person/people you will be bringing. We also like to take a look at your Fetlife profile (feel free to friend us!) or social media profile. Sub Rosa is a very special place and we like to know who we are sharing it with. As longtime members of the kink community, discretion is sacrosanct, and we NEVER share information about our renters with anyone. We ask the same of our community of renters and class attendees, as our address and location is not public.

Curious about limits? Limits aren’t a bad thing and everyone has them including us. No blood or bodily fluid play. No fire play. No art supplies. And of course, no sex or naked bodies on the vintage velvet couch. A full list of the rules is available when you reserve your time. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Please arrive in masks. One of us (Natasha or Viola) will let you in to show you around, also masked, before leaving you to your private escape. We have a very strict cleaning protocol (much of which we put into play LONG before Covid) so you can be assured that our space is one of the cleanest places to visit in Portland.

It is our dream playspace and we treat it as such. We hope you will reach out if you are interested in renting!

Representation Matters

If you have connections with clubs, venues, or really, ANY organizations or companies with employees please use your connections to pressure them to align and act with this racial justice movement and seek DEI training for owners and staff, as well as representation in your organizations. The PDX Stripper Strike is leading by demanding fair treatment and equal stage opportunities, accountability, and restorative justice in the local clubs in Portland. Be sure to support the clubs who have signed on, and pressure/boycott the clubs who have not. You can also donate to the collective action.

We have been investing more time in our own direct actions and anti-racist education. We will be joining this upcoming series hosted by Marla Renee Stewart and Luna MatatasRace & Kink: A Bi-Weekly Discussion Series. We hope you will join us too! TICKETS HERE.

Kink & Revolution

What a monumental set of circumstances have brought us to this point in history, a moment of collective trauma, activation, shift, rage, sorrow, and hopefully, radical change. We recognize large gaps in our understanding of racism and have committed to anti-racist education for ourselves, but we need to do better. It is more than talk and education that is needed.

As sex workers/educators we live an already political life, combating the intersections of shame, sex-negativity, and sex work discrimination, but not a single one of us white or white-passing people can truly understand what Black people are dealing with in this country, the violence and the silence they have had to endure.

BLACK LIVES MATTER & BLACK TRANS LIVES MATTER. But it isn’t enough to say this, we are committed to doing the internal work to disrupt racism and white fragility, educating the other white people we have access to, activating our sphere of influence, using our privilege, and donating money and time to these causes for Black lives and Black futures.

Sub Rosa stands also with the PDX Stripper Strike – a labor movement demanding fair treatment of Black dancers at strip clubs in Portland. We have endorsed and have committed to doing more DEI training with our members as well as pushing for the other organizations/clubs/venues that we work with to do the same.

Some other places you can start/support: buy and hire services from Portland POC-owned businesses, donate to direct aid with Portland’s Equitable Giving Circle, read: this antiracist reading list, watch this movie: The 13th, donate to organizations that support Black trans folks (recognizing the underreported recent murders), PUSH for your companies and organizations to enlist the services of this local DEI training group: Empress Rules Equity Consulting, or find a Black-led DEI consulting group.

This is so important right now, our Black and Indigenous friends cannot wait for us to act any longer.

love and strength and spanks,

Viola & Natasha

Covid: A New Normal

A friend of Sub Rosa’s, Dr Evelin Dacker, recently posted this article on opening up social circles in the days to come. We encourage you to read it to help you understand your risks, and those of your social circle to stay safe as things reopen.

We are in the process of creating processes to keep ourselves and our renters safe.

We are watching the news to stay informed as to what the best practices are in businesses like ours. Currently we are available to regular vetted renters who are quarantined together. We are asking that people arrive in masks to greet us, and refrain from using the public toys for now. If there are toys you usually borrow from us, let us know and we can have them out for you.

We are taking care to wipe surfaces down with Clorox wipes – especially those heavy touch areas like door knobs, sink knobs, toilet handles. We are asking you to do the same at the end of your play time. Of course we clean all surfaces after you leave as well, but we don’t know what you’ve been up to during your stay so taking care to clean up after yourselves will at worst, leave some places doubly cleaned, which isn’t a bad thing in the time of Covid.

Classes and other social gatherings like 50 Shades of STFU and Quink will continue, but online. We are just starting to add classes to the roster, so check back often!

We will be using our blog, as well as our newsletter to keep you up to date on our current policies. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Interview with Marla Renee Stewart aka Miss Marla

Marla Renee Stewart | Miss Marla

How long have you been involved in (the particular kink/fetish you will be teaching about and how did you get involved?

I have been involved in the kink lifestyle for over 20 years. I first got involved because as a go-go dancer in San Francisco, I found the fetish attire beautiful and then someone educated me on what it all meant. From there, I was all in and ready to get involved into doing more! I think it definitely helped to be in San Francisco at the time. Currently, I’m a part of a kink/leather organization, ONYX Pearls Southeast that mentors and educates young women of color into being involved in the kink community.

What advice would you give your younger self when you started exploring this type of play?

The advice I would give my younger self would be to be open on all the different types of fetishes. As a young person, I was definitely conservative in my thoughts in what I deemed “appropriate,” but as I’ve aged, I now know that limiting myself definitely puts a damper on how certain things could improve my life. Spanking, slapping, and choking is sexy and now I’m here to really prove it!

How has your play evolved?

I tend to attract vanilla partners, so my play has evolved in aspects of intimacy and how to be intimate with others when it comes to kink. The ways in which I can ultimately have genuine care and concern for someone have helped me grow in the ways that I see kink in my life and I’m happy that I have a partner that is able to understand that aspect of me and respect it, accordingly.

What do you love about sharing your kink or fetish with others?

I love seeing the light bulbs go off in my student’s heads! When that happens, I see that they have real joy in knowing that they can also evolve with their sexuality. When I see someone who says that ordinarily they wouldn’t like it, but they love the way that I perform it on them, that totally makes my day and reassures me that this is what I was put on this earth to do.

She will be teaching The Charm of Choking on June 17th.
