Education

Sub Rosa hosts a wide variety of kink and sex-positive classes, both in person and virtual. Viola and Natasha teach most of our classes, and we have limited capacity for guest educators as well.

We look for educators with strong experience in kink education, from intro classes to more advanced subjects. We only work with educators that we know personally and/or whose teaching we have experienced. If we don’t have an established professional relationship, we must see a virtual class (recording is ok) or attend an in-person class before considering hosting your class. In our experience, new guest teachers do better with an in-person class if they teach online with us first.

Sub Rosa manages ticketing and promotes the class, and expects guest educators to promote the class as well. Having a mailing list, social media presence, or other way to market the class is essential. We value the knowledge and experience veteran kink educators bring to our audience and work hard to make sure they are paid appropriately.

The goal of Sub Rosa is to create community and teach BDSM and kink in an approachable, inclusive way. Using gender neutral language and knowledge of the queer experience is essential for teaching with us. Sub Rosa is a trans-inclusive space, and bio-essentialism and transphobia are not tolerated. We make our classes financially accessible by offering discount codes to BIPOC (60%) as well as those suffering financial hardship (50%).

Our in-person classes take place in our private space in SE Portland. All attendees must have a ticket in order to get Sub Rosa’s address. We do not offer tickets at the door. A sold out in-person class is usually 25 people. Suggested ticket price for a 2-hour class is $55. Class time is generally 7-9pm and we find Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays work best for our audience but are open to other times. Longer workshops, more intimate intensives, or weekend retreats are possible on a case by case basis.

Attendees are welcomed into the space with hot tea, cookies and other snacks provided by Sub Rosa, and other little touches that help create a fun escape from everyday life. We find people coming to in person classes enjoy a bit of social time so encourage working an ice breaker and a 15 minute break into your presentation.

There are some challenges to accessibility in our old industrial building. There is no passenger elevator, and stairs are required. We offer to meet attendees at the door to assist upon request. Events and classes can be ASL interpreted upon request. Masks are optional and welcome. There is an air filter in the space. We are not requiring vax cards or covid tests at this time. This policy can be adjusted to the comfort level of the instructor.

Our virtual classes take place on Zoom hosted by Sub Rosa, with a suggested sliding scale ticket price between $25-$35. Classes generally run from 6-7:30pm PST. Some classes feature a cameras-on, recording-off social time for participants from 7:30-8pm. We do not limit the max number of tickets, and average around 40 tickets per class. We offer the recording to all ticket holders for 30 days. We also offer the educator a copy of the recording for their use and ask that if they publish it elsewhere, they state it was taught for Sub Rosa and have a link to our site.

All guest educators must sign the Sub Rosa Guest Educator Agreement, see terms below.
